Kinran (金襴) is a traditional Japanese brocade produced by weaving metallic gold thread — typically flat-rolled metal foil on a silk or synthetic core — into a patterned ground fabric. It has been used in Japan for centuries in ceremonial garments, Buddhist textiles, and high-status clothing.
Working with kinran requires different techniques than standard garment construction. The metallic thread can break if handled incorrectly; seam placement must account for the weave structure; and the finished garment needs specific care to maintain the metallic quality over time.
Our kinran pieces are among the most labour-intensive items we produce. They are available in very limited quantities and only by inquiry. No two pieces are alike.
Kinran garments are not available through the standard online shop. They are produced when suitable bolt material becomes available and are offered directly to interested buyers. Pricing is quoted individually based on the specific bolt and construction.
